Next Generation Philanthropy

THE INSTITUTE FOR FAMILY BUSINESS AND THE INSTITUTE FOR PHILANTHROPY LAUNCH MAJOR NEW PHILANTHROPY PROJECT

11th January, 2007

January 2007 sees the arrival of an exciting and unique new programme that will help young inheritors of family businesses, based both in the UK and internationally, to increase the impact of their charitable giving. Next Generation Philanthropy, a collaboration between the Institute for Philanthropy and the Institute for Family Business, is a two-year programme that will give young people the tools for more effective grant-making. Participants will be adults between the ages of 18 and 28, whose families have grant-making trusts or whose family businesses have corporate giving schemes.

Grant Gordon, the Director General of the Institute for Family Business, said that:

“This is a fantastic initiative; it’s very important that young people gain an excellent grounding in effective giving and social responsibility issues early in their careers, and the Institute for Philanthropy are first-class at providing that. What’s more, the knowledge that these young people will acquire will enable them to work with family members on common and challenging issues. The rich blend of perspectives that the different members of a family can provide will be of real benefit when addressing social problems. Family businesses already undertake a lot of philanthropic work in their local communities and this programme will strengthen this tradition.”

Dr. Salvatore LaSpada, the Chief Executive of the Institute for Philanthropy, was equally enthusiastic. He said that:

“We’re really looking forward to working with a group of bright and dynamic young people, and guiding them as they seek to become donors who’ll one day make a real difference. In this goal, the Institute for Family Business are a natural partner for us, since they have done terrific work in creating the UK’s only independent network of family businesses. Their model – of bringing together like-minded people to exchange their knowledge and experiences – is one that has served us so well in our direction of The Philanthropy Workshop, our donor training programme and network of high net worth families from all over the world.”
